The best movie and food combinations

20 April 2021

Whether you’re watching a movie snuggled at home on your sofa, at the cinema or at a drive-in movie theatre, everyone knows you can’t enjoy it fully without a proper snack!

There’s something about movies that make us want to snack and apparently some movies make us want to snack more than others. Fun fact! A study carried out by researchers at the Cornell Food and Brand Lab found that 98% more people ate snacks whilst watching an action movie compared to those watching a talk show. Hmmm.

Hmmm.

The researchers came to the conclusion that more stimulating films that are fast paced and include many camera cuts, really draw you in and distract you from what you are eating. You’re so distracted that you’re not watching what and how much you are eating. Now is that a good thing or bad thing? Sorry, we couldn’t hear you, we were too busy eating all this popcorn!

With this in mind, we’ve put together our ideal movie genre and snack combinations:

Action – Popcorn!

Yes, popcorn goes well with all movies, but it’s now been SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN that it goes best with high-intensity scenes, superior quality graphics, and ear-drum-bursting sound that action movies present. Popcorn can be quite noisy too, so action films are best to help mask the sound of you scoffing them down. It’s no contest - Popcorn is the king snack for movie lovers, but now…salted or sweet? It’s a never-ending debate.

Comedy – Pick n Mix!

Gummy bears, love hearts, toffees and sugar laces gives us that nostalgic high of our childhoods – even if we don’t indulge all that much anymore.  We know they’re a cheeky treat, so on normal occasions we tend to avoid them. But, with a good comedy you’ll be laughing so much you won’t care. Comedies make us happy; sugar treats make us happy – it’s a win-win!

Kids Films – Ice Cream!

Ice creams have got to be hands down, a kid’s favourite cinema treat. But we aren’t forgetting all the gelato loving grown-ups too! And, watching kids’ movies always reminds us of our childhood, so compliment the experience by grabbing a tub or cone of ice cream. Good thing we’ve got locally made, fresh gelato on hand at The Drive In. Order up!

Romance – Chocolate!

This one is obvious, just like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks belonging together in a 90s rom-com – when you’re watching a romantic movie you have to have chocolate! Here comes the scientific bit, chocolates trigger a similar emotion to love with all the enzymes and dopamine. We’re full of fun food facts at The Drive In!

Horror – nothing…?

That’s right, we think it’s best not to have anything spill-able, smearable or sticky in your hands whilst you’re watching a horror film. Films like Nightmare on Elm Street and Stephen King’s IT require the keenest eyes, the sharpest minds – you can’t be munching away on those chips when you’ve got a killer clown to look out for! And it goes doubly so if you’re taking a big slurp of something delicious when he finally pops out of that drain – soda meet lap, meet car. What a mess!

Any film ever? - Hot Dogs & Nachos!

Like popcorn, hot dogs and nachos are a universal snack when it comes to watching movies. Pile ‘em high with cheese, jalapenos, salsa or mustard and ketchup and chow down as catch the latest blockbuster. Just make sure you’ve got napkins on hand afterwards!

At the drive-in theatre London, we want to make sure you have the full American drive thru movie experience, with a full menu of delicious hot food, including classics like hot dogs and fries, cheeseburgers, sweets and lots and lots of popcorn of course!
